ART MEDIA

Hi All!  Happy Hump Day!

Another great introduction to share! -- Introducing ** ART MEDIA ~ BEST OF 2013 NEOCON GOLD ENTRY FOR CARPET- MODULAR TILE

“Milliken explores the boundaries of ‘Art Media’ and ‘Media Art’, as the floor plane becomes a canvas for larger-than-life installation art or the fine detail that feels like an intimate secret through the use of advanced digital printing.”
INSPIRATION |

ART MEDIA is a library of patterns reinterpreting iconoclastic modern art techniques and media: Charcoal, Chalk, Graphite, Action Painting, Drip Painting, and the optical illusions of Op Art.

Designed by Cresta Bledsoe, ART MEDIA consists of six patterns that offer a variety of quintessential modern art aesthetics in a range of scales that are completely versatile from large focal point installation art to neutral and planar textural ground. The optional Canvas edge details can act as a border or transition.

CHARCOAL | Soft, but boldly gritty, Charcoal is non-directional line work on a static ground that features a subtle striae in the background. The striae is smears from the charcoal itself, giving this design a slightly superior wear-ability compared to a complete solid. Charcoal is the largest scale pattern and the only precision set ‘medallion’ pattern repeat in the collection. Charcoal is a 4-tile precision set, ‘medallion’ pattern repeat that perfectly achieves drama for large scale spaces and small feature areas.

CHALK > Chalk is a medium-scale, rhythmic, continuous-flowing line made up of three linear layers of varying thickness, line weight, and smudges, delivering a scrawled-on-chalkboard effect. Chalk is a 9 random multi-tile repeat.

GRAPHITE > A small scale pseudo-linear rhythmic pattern made up of 3 layers of varying thickness, line weight, and smudges, having a scrawled on chalkboard effect. Graphite is a 6 random multi-tile repeat.

ACTION PAINTING > A large scale dramatic and gestural pattern, Action Painting refers to the use of the whole body to paint – not just a hand and brush. These paintings are created by moving around a large canvas on the ground and spattering painting from all sides to create a non-directional, but animated paint texture. The Action Painting pattern is bold and while there are a couple of neutral color ways, most are multi-color in approach.  Action Painting is a 4 random multi-tile repeat. ** Faded canvas edge shown here!

DRIP PAINTING > The smaller scale of the two, Drip Painting is an abstract art in which the paint is dripped onto the canvas using unconventional tools such as sticks or hardened brushes. This technique creates a unified overall pattern that allows the eye to travel across the whole canvas – or floor plane in this instance. All-over line and drip texture allows for no positive or negative space where there is no figure or ground. Drip Painting is a 4 random pattern with no pattern repeat- every tile is unique.

OP ART > Op Art was a modern art movement influencing major trends such as Bauhaus and the DeStijl movement, but hit iconoclastic status in the mid-century. It focuses on illusion or optical tricks. Here, we have used precise line work to draw-in the viewer and also expand with a modern iconic starburst that perfectly utilizes the modular tile format. The pattern occurs from the tile corners with seams becoming part of the pattern, and therefore camouflaged. Additionally, the centers of the tiles are unique to create a very large scale random super graphic. This can be bold or a very subtle, near solid, depending on color way.  Op Art is a 9 random multi-tile repeat.

** Additionally, as an optional accessory or trim tile, we offer canvas left or canvas right patterns on CHARCOAL, CHALK, GRAPHITE, ACTION & DRIP PAINTING. These tiles feature the perimeter of the artwork where the pattern fades to the canvas edge. This creates opportunities to define circulation, create a ‘white space’ edge to transition to other modular flooring, or as edge detail to transition to hard surface floor. The pattern consists of a companion right or left version tile, for all 4 of the tiles. These canvas edge tiles are to be installed precisely paired with their corresponding tile.  ** Shown on Action Painting above.
